Struggling with Your First Florida Lawn? Here’s What Every New Kissimmee Homeowner Should Expect Hi there! Just moved to Kissimmee and staring at your first Florida lawn? Yeah, I get it. You’re probably wondering why your grass looks nothing like what you had up north, or why your neighbor’s yard is green while yours looks like it’s giving up on life. Don’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong. Florida lawns are just… different. Really different. Let me break down what you’re actually dealing with here so you can stop stressing and start enjoying that beautiful Florida weather. Your Grass Isn’t Broken, It’s Just Florida First thing, forget everything you knew about grass. That thick, green carpet you had in Ohio? Not happening here. Florida grass grows differently, looks different, and definitely acts different. Most Kissimmee homes have St. Augustine grass or Bermuda grass. St. Augustine is that thick, spongy stuff that feels amazing under your feet. Bermuda is tougher and handles foot traffic better. Both are great, but they need specific care. The big shock? Your grass might go completely...

Hi there!

Your Grass Isn’t Broken, It’s Just Florida

First thing, forget everything you knew about grass.

Your grass might go completely dormant and brown in winter. That’s normal! It’s not dead, it’s just taking a nap until spring.

Water Wars: The Biggest Challenge You’ll Face

Here’s where most new homeowners mess up, watering. You’ll either drown your grass or let it die of thirst. There’s barely any middle ground.

Florida’s weird because we get zero rain for months, then suddenly it’s monsoon season. Your grass needs to handle both extremes.

The golden rule: Water deep but not often. When you water, soak it good. Then leave it alone for a few days. Your grass roots need to grow down looking for water, if you water every day, they stay shallow and weak.

Watch for these signs:

Grass blades folded in half? Time to water

Can see your footprints after walking across the lawn? Definitely time to water

Grass looks blue-gray instead of green? You waited too long

And here’s something nobody tells you, Kissimmee has watering restrictions. You can only water on certain days, between 4 AM and 9 AM. Breaking these rules gets expensive fast.

Mowing: Higher Than You Think

Coming from somewhere else? You’re probably cutting your grass way too short. I see it all the time, new Kissimmee residents scalping their lawns because that’s what worked back home.

Big mistake. Florida sun is brutal. Cut your grass short and you’re basically cooking it.

Here’s what works:

St. Augustine: 3 to 4 inches tall

Bermuda: 2 to 3 inches tall

Yeah, that seems really tall. Do it anyway. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps weeds out, and survives our crazy heat better.

Pro tip: Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at once. If your grass got away from you, cut it down gradually over a few weeks.

The Dreaded Florida Summer

Summer in Kissimmee hits different. We’re talking 95 degrees with 90% humidity, plus afternoon thunderstorms that come out of nowhere.

Your grass grows like crazy during summer. You’ll go from “hmm, maybe I should mow” to “holy cow, I can’t find my mailbox” in about a week.

Most people need their grass cut weekly from May through September. But here’s the thing: you don’t want to be out there doing it yourself when it’s 100 degrees and feels like a sauna.

That’s where professional lawn care in Kissimmee FL comes in handy. We know when to cut, how high to cut, and we don’t mind sweating buckets while you stay inside with the AC cranked up.

Edging and Clean-Up: The Stuff That Makes It Look Professional

You know what separates a decent lawn from one that makes the neighbors jealous? The edges.

Clean edges around sidewalks, driveways, and flower beds make everything look intentional. Sloppy edges make even perfect grass look messy.

Same thing with blowing off the clippings. Leaving grass all over your driveway and sidewalks just looks lazy. A quick blow-off takes two minutes but makes a huge difference.

Weeds: They’re Coming Whether You Like It or Not

Florida weeds are aggressive. They grow fast, spread faster, and some of them are honestly pretty impressive if they weren’t ruining your lawn.

The best defense? Thick, healthy grass. Weeds struggle to compete with dense turf. But when your grass is stressed, thin, or cut too short, weeds move right in.

Regular weed eating around edges and fence lines keeps things looking clean. Miss it for a few weeks and you’ll have a jungle growing up your mailbox post.

Winter: When Everything Looks Dead But Isn’t

This one freaks out every new Florida homeowner. December rolls around and your beautiful green lawn turns brown and crunchy. You start googling “dead grass” and “lawn replacement costs.”

Relax. It’s dormant, not dead.

Most Florida grass goes dormant when temperatures drop below about 50 degrees for more than a few days. It stops growing, stops being green, and basically hibernates until spring.

This is normal! Don’t water it a bunch trying to “wake it up.” Don’t fertilize it. Just leave it alone and wait for spring.

Drainage: Florida’s Secret Lawn Killer

Nobody talks about this enough: drainage problems will destroy your lawn faster than anything else.

Those afternoon thunderstorms I mentioned? They dump inches of rain in an hour. If your yard doesn’t drain well, you’ll have standing water for days. Standing water kills grass and creates perfect conditions for fungus and disease.

Look for low spots in your yard where water sits after rain. These need to be fixed before they become permanent dead zones.

When to Call in the Pros

Look, I’m not going to lie to you: maintaining a Florida lawn is work. It’s hot work, sweaty work, and there’s a learning curve that can get expensive if you mess up.

If you’re a busy professional or just don’t want to spend your weekends fighting with a mower in 95-degree heat, professional lawn care services in Kissimmee FL are worth every penny.

We handle the grass cutting, edging, weed eating, and clean-up so you can actually enjoy your yard instead of constantly working on it. Plus, we know which grass types you have, what they need, and when they need it.

The Bottom Line

Your first Florida lawn doesn’t have to be a disaster. It just needs different care than what you’re probably used to.

Water less often but deeper. Cut higher than you think. Don’t panic when it goes brown in winter. And seriously consider getting help during the brutal summer months.

Ready to Stop Struggling with Your Lawn?

At Gavin’s Home and Lawn Care, we’ve been helping Kissimmee homeowners get beautiful lawns without the stress. We handle everything: grass cutting, edging, weed eating, and clean-up: so you can enjoy your yard instead of working on it every weekend.

Hi we recently finished a stone removal and install of mulch,we enjoyed this project as it made the house and landscaping so much more beautiful. We did a complete removal and re-landscaped the front of their house and helped install a water fountain. We started by removing all the old landscaping and then removed all the old stone that was filled with weeds ,then we installed a fabric cloth barrier to help stop weeds from growing through the new mulch. After that we planted the new plants (the plants were all picked by the client she picked a very nice selection and she positioned them where she liked them they looked fantastic when done) we installed fresh Pine bark mulch we source our mulch from a very repable local Landscape supply store and the last part was installing a fountain in the front which really added to the overall look also picked out and positioned by the client she filled it with beautiful flowers to really set it off. Overall a very pleasing job to do
